Goalkeeper coaching

ICarlisle City have this season launched a Goalkeeper Development programme in association with ex-professional keeper Tony Elliott. Tony, now working for the Cumberland FA as well as the Liverpool FC academy, will support Carlisle City in their approach to coaching goalkeepers.

The programme was launched at the Sheepmount on 25th June when Tony met all the City coaches, and outlined the thinking behind the scheme. On that evening, Tony gave some coaching instructions on basic techniques, such as warm-ups. In discussions with the group, Tony stressed the important role of the goalkeeper to any football team. It has become apparent over the last few years that goalkeepers need specialist coaching and training, and should not be left just to train themselves.

Tony (pictured right) will keep in contact with all of the City sides during this season and he will see as many games as he can. In the near future, coaching sessions will be provided for all goalkeepers playing for Carlisle City.

UPDATE POSTED 31ST JULY 2008

. Tony Elliot has started coaching all our junior boys from ages under 7's to under 12's( 16 boys took part ) then under 13's up to senior level ( 8 players took part ) then finally the girls ( 6 girls took part ). The coaching was similar to what he showed the coaches on our 1st get together. He started off with warm ups, then the very basics of positioning, the basic saves/ catches / dives etc and a little bit of distribution. As training officer I am absolutely thrilled with what Tony can bring to our club. This is a marvellous opportunity for all our keepers. He himself is really looking forward to developing our keepers and he is very keen for us coaches to try and use what he showed us (and the keepers) in our own training sessions.

A massive thank you must go to the Cumberland FA as they are funding this programme. Finally he has been pleasantly surprised by the numbers taking part and also with their attitude.
