James Tose after Heaton game

“History For The Football Club”

I spoke to City boss James Tose after his side picked up the club’s maiden win in the FA Vase competition and progress into the second qualifying round:

“Its absolutely fantastic-Making a moment in history for the football club! It was nice to be in charge for the club’s first game in the vase last year and now the first victory in the cup. It almost makes it a bit sweeter away from home, local officials and where a lot is against you.”

“Obviously, its nice to come back to North-East; that’s where I’m from. It’s a place where I have found memories of and I guess I must be unlucky for Heaton Stannington.”

“We were the better team in the early stages of the game and we were playing the better football, especially when we won the penalty which was deserved. They had a few half chances, when Michael Ballantyne made a good save near the end of the half, but I think we scored at the right times.”

“We got our nose in front with the early goal and then an early one in the second half gave us a platform to build from. When you go two nil up, you sometimes take your foot off the gas, but Heaton went a bit more ‘Gung-Ho’ to get back into the game.”

“The changing moment was when they went down to ten men, occasionally that goes against you as it throws your shape, and people get lazy. There was a bit of that, but we dug in and scrapped it out. Credit to our opponents, they really pushed on and as the game was so hectic we needed some composure.”

“We did show composure when we killed the game off with the third goal, it could have been four or five after that but their keeper made some good saves. But, I’m delighted with the victory and for the boys-This shows that we can dig out a result when need be.”

“We are going to get games like that, yes, its nice to play the pretty football but what we did today was scrap it out. Regardless, we are through to the next round and I’m really happy.”
